The qualifying for the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix was a positive session for Aston Martin. Fernando Alonso was able to qualify in the front row right alongside Max Verstappen. However, the team have filed a protest against the results of the qualifying session.
Why did Aston Martin protest the results of the qualifying session for the Chinese Grand Prix?
The protest states an alleged breach of article 29.6 of the FIA Sporting Regulations. According to the regulation, any car that comes to a stop on the track during qualifying is not permitted to continue the session.
The protest is aimed to disqualify Carlos Sainz from Q2. While completing his first fast lap in Q2, Carlos Sainz took the final corner of the track a bit faster than he should have. In doing so, the car went on the gravel trap and sent it spinning across the track and into the wall. This incident brought out the red flag.
Right after the accident, it seemed as though Sainz would not be able to continue. But he eventually was able to get the car running with just damage to the tyres and the front wing. As the session resumed, the FIA did not restrict Sainz from getting out on track again.

If Aston Martin’s protest is successful, Sainz would have to start the Chinese Grand Prix from the 15th position on the grid. The Ferraris already have an uphill task ahead of them for tomorrow as they qualified not only behind the Red Bulls but also Alonso and the McLarens. If Sainz is to start from the 15th spot, it would create further problems for the team as they look to score valuable points for the race.
If Sainz is to start from 15th, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll would also be able to gain one position and start from 10th on the grid after a poor qualifying performance. With Lewis Hamilton starting outside the top 10 as well, the midfield teams will have a good chance to score a couple of points.
